Some premium rice products contain long, slender grains that do not stick together. A high-quality rice product is sold in raw and parboiled forms. This type of product can be used as an accompaniment to a meat-based dish or as a complementary ingredient that is part of a stew or a casserole.

The Milling Process

White rice grains undergo a milling process. During this process, the rice germ, husk, and bran components are stripped from each grain. Milling alters the flavor and texture of rice products. Many of the nutrients that are found in whole grains are not present in milled products. Brown rice consists of whole grains that haven't undergone a milling process. Milling extends the shelf life of rice. It also contributes to a faster cooking process. 

Raw And Parboiled Options

A raw premium rice product hasn't been heat-treated. This type of product will take considerably longer to prepare than a parboiled product. There are many premium white rice vareties, including jasmine and basmati. Some manufacturers fortify their products. The fortification process involves adding a coating to each granule. The coating contains a blend of nutrients that were originally depleted during the milling process.

A parboiled rice product has been partially cooked. Rice is boiled briefly. Afterward, rice is cooled down and packaged. Parboiled products may be listed as 'minute' or 'instant' rice varieties. A parboiled rice variety is suitable to use during occasions when a food preparer is pressed for time. Parboiled rice products are convenience foods. A rice product that can be prepared quickly will pair well with other ingredients that have been pre-cooked. 

Prep Steps And The Assembly Of A Meal

Raw and parboiled premium rice can be cooked in a pot of boiling water or baked inside of an oven-safe casserole dish. If a meal is going to require ingredients to simmer all day, the use of a crockpot will be sufficient to cook a white rice product and the other components of a dish. Seasonings, vegetables, and meat slices can be added to a plain white rice product.

White rice that has been properly seasoned can be used to fill a burrito or a taco or served as a side dish that will be enjoyed separately from an entree. Rice is commonly used to bulk up stews and soups. Cooked rice that isn't going to be consumed immediately should be refrigerated.
